Equipped with electronic-hydraulic forced steering axle system

New intelligent steering system on the forage trailer

For the forthcoming season, Strautmann presents the electronic-hydraulic forced steering axle system "Strautmann electronic steering" (SES) as a new feature on the forage trailer.

Unlike in conventional forced steering axle systems, the steering input in the SES system is not hydraulically detected and transmitted via master cylinders, but electronically via an angle of rotation sensor.

This sensor converts the steering angle into an electrical signal which is transmitted to the steering computer that takes over the control of the steering cylinders at the steered axle (in case of tandem vehicles) or at the steered axles (in case of tridem vehicles).

The SES system is fixed to the tractor like a standardized hydraulic forced steering axle system by means of a K 50 ball head, conversion measures on the tractor thus being unnecessary.

The advantages of the SES system are obvious:

Larger steering angles are possible, as there are no limit stops. The combinations of tractor and trailer are thus much easier to manoeuvre in particular in narrow courtyards compared to purely hydraulic solutions.

If a malfunction of the steering system occurs, the safety circuit of the SES switches the system into "faile-safe" mode such that the steering axle works like a conventional follow-up steering.

Engaging, as known from purely hydraulic forced steering axle systems, is not necessary either. The turning radii are preset at the SES depending on the distance between the axles. Each steering axle follows the preset radius taking into account the respective wheelbase; thus, excessive wear on the wheels is reduced to a minimum. Furthermore, the steering axles can be locked from the cabin if necessary.

Moreover, the SES excels by great road safety. As unlike in purely hydraulic forced steering axle systems, the steering angle is adapted to the travelling speed. When travelling on the road at high speeds, the steering angle is reduced which leads to high driving stability. Rocking due to a fast ride and a quick steering movement is excluded.

From the autumn of 2010, the SES system will be available in all vehicles of the Giga Vitesse CFS series at an additional charge of 700 € above the price of the purely hydraulic solution..
